Early Life and Education
Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton to Indian parents who had emigrated from East Africa. His father was a general practitioner for the National Health Service (NHS) and his mother was a pharmacist. Sunak attended Winchester College, a boarding school in Hampshire, and then Lincoln College, Oxford, where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). He later went on to Stanford University in the United States, where he received an MBA.
Career
Business Career
After graduating from Stanford, Sunak worked as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs. He then co-founded a hedge fund called The Children’s Investment Fund Management (TCI). Sunak left TCI in 2009 to join another hedge fund called Theleme Partners. He also served as a director of the investment firm Catamaran Ventures, which is owned by his father-in-law, N. R. Narayana Murthy.
Political Career
In 2015, Sunak was elected MP for Richmond (Yorks). He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in 2018. In 2019, he was promoted to Chief Secretary to the Treasury. In 2020, Sunak was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer following the resignation of Sajid Javid.
As Chancellor, Sunak has been responsible for overseeing the UK’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has introduced a number of measures to support businesses and individuals, including the furlough scheme, the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, and the self-employment income support scheme.
Personal Life
Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy. The couple have two daughters.
