Early Life and Education
Jada Pinkett Smith was born on September 18, 1971, in Baltimore, Maryland. She is the daughter of contractor Robsol Grant Pinkett, Jr., and nurse Adrienne Banfield-Norris, who divorced after several months of marriage. Her father is of African-American descent and her mother is of Afro-Caribbean ancestry (from Barbados and Jamaica). Pinkett Smith majored in dance and choreography at the Baltimore School for the Arts, where one of her classmates was rapper Tupac Shakur. She spent a year at the North Carolina School of the Arts before dropping out to pursue her career in acting.
Career
Pinkett Smith began her acting career in the early 1990s. She had small roles in films such as Menace II Society and Jason‘s Lyric before landing her breakthrough role as Lena James in the Eddie Murphy comedy The Nutty Professor.
