Rosemary Chukwuma Biography

Rosemary Chukwuma is a Nigerian sprinter. In the 4 x 100 m relay at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she took home a bronze medal, and at the 2019 African Games, she won a gold medal. In 2018, she clocked a time of 11.17 seconds to win the gold medal in the 100 metres at the Summer Youth Olympics. She won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Early Life and Education

Rosemary Chukwuma was born on December 5, 2001, in Ekwashi, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The young and enterprising athlete had her primary and secondary education in Nigeria before heading abroad for her university education and also to give her athletic career a boost.

Career

Rosemary Chukwuma participated in her debut international competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, where the Nigerian 4 x 100 m relay team finished third in 42.75 seconds, trailing only the teams from England and Jamaica. She did not compete in the 200 m race but earned a gold medal with the 4 x 100 m relay team at the 2018 African Championships in Asaba in the summer. She qualified for the Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires and won the 100-meter gold medal there earlier in the year after winning two gold medals at the 2018 African Youth Games in Algiers in the 100- and 200-meter races.

She raced times of 11.62 seconds, 23.81 seconds, and 45.56 seconds with the Nigerian 4 x 100 m relay team. She won three gold medals at the Junior African Championships in Abidjan in 2019. She competed for Nigeria in the 4 x 100 m relay at the IAAF World Relays in Yokohama in May, clocking a first-round time of 45.07 seconds. She then competed in the African Games for the first time in Rabat and advanced to the 200 m final despite not starting the race. Along with the Nigerian relay team, she took home the gold in 44.16 seconds.

She was also a gold medalist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with the likes of Tobi AmusanOfili FavourNwokocha Nzubechi Grace, and Udo Joy Gabriel Chinenye in the women’s 4 x 100m relay.
